Abstract Desire theories of well-being claim that how well our life goes for us is solely determined by the fulfilment and frustration desires. Several writers have argued these are incorrect because they fail to capture harms self-sacrifice severe depression. In this paper, I argue desire can account harm both phenomena rejecting proportionalism about motivation. This view desires always motivate proportionally their strength. If we reject view, then explain many cases as arising when act upon weaker thereby frustrate stronger Moreover, depression be explained its suppression motivational force inevitably frustrates left unmotivated fulfil. approach captures experiential quality better than rival views seek problematise well-being. sufficient conceptual resources residual less approach.
